My Love Affair with Gouache or..... 50 Shades of Gouache

I just can’t quit you, Gouache.  Your distinctive nature enchants me. I am attracted to your idiosyncrasies which reveal themselves to me whenever we are together. I love how you show off your fiercely brilliant colors when I squeeze you from your “entubement” into the bright light of day. I am mesmerized that my soft brushes, lovingly caressing your mass of viscous jewels can shape you into (what you were always meant to be) a cherished intimate work of art. I am blissfully seduced by your transformation from insignificant globs of color into a scene of velvety richness to be admired. Now, I love you even more.

Gouache, you are so patient with my clumsy strokes, allowing me to petition your indulgence to correct the error of my ways. You are the only one with whom I can do this, with ease, though you are still a stranger to me. I have so much to learn from you. Someday, I pledge to devote myself to you exclusively so I can with dedication and intense fervor become your benevolent master.

In the meantime I’m cheating on you with your cousin, Open Acrylic!

A Sight to Behold

My FASO website says right there at the bottom of my site’s home page to check out my “Latest Blog Posts”, so it makes sense that I at least have one post. Here is the first of many, or several. As you can already tell, I’m not much of a writer, which is why I paint but I know some excellent artists who are also amazing writers, Jeremy Mann (Red Rabbit 7)  and Elizabeth Pollie to think of two. Check them out if you like to read good prose and see beautiful artwork.

I just got my second cataract surgery yesterday morning so I’m expecting a color shift in my future paintings. Whites are whiter, blues and purples more intense than they have been in years and everything is brighter and crisper.  Posted below is an example of my vision change when I had the first eye done and I could tell the stark difference. Here it is:

Before After

The night of my second Cataract surgery played out differently. As darkness sets in my Luminara candles light up and I observe the strange phenomena of double rings of light around each light. Apparently this is normal after surgery in some cases. Here is a crude example of what it looked like to me which I created with iPhoto mark up on the photo: It was actually very beautiful and a sight to behold. That’s all for now. Sorry for the abrupt ending to my first blog, my studio is calling me. Next post will contain artwork with interesting tidbits on how and why the works were created, especially the plein-air stuff.
